In the 2013 Policy Address, the government proposed the redevelopment of Kwai Chung Hospital to provide more appropriate care and support for mental health patients.
The redevelopment project will be carried out in three phases. Phase 1 includes the construction of a relocation building on the existing parking lot of Queen Mary Hospital, as well as the renovation of blocks L/M and J of Kwai Chung Hospital, block N of Queen Mary Hospital, and the nursing school and dormitory for service relocation. This work commenced in mid-2016 and was completed in July 2018.
The scope of the redevelopment for Phases 2 and 3 is as follows:
Phase 2:
- Demolition of all existing buildings at Kwai Chung Hospital, except for blocks L/M and J.
- Construction of a new main block and a pediatric and adolescent block.
- Construction of a lift tower on Lai King Hill Road, with a connecting bridge leading
- to the redeveloped main block of Kwai Chung Hospital.
- Renovation and expansion works for areas of Queen Mary Hospital affected by the
- proposed redevelopment of Kwai Chung Hospital.
Phase 3:
Demolition of blocks L/M to create a patient rehabilitation garden.
